Tony Blair told to Ban Circumcision of Males Under 18

Tuesday 13th February 2007
A British Citizen has created an e-petition to ban male circumcision on the British government's 10 Downing Street website.

"Despite the fact that it has no health benefits, and can be seriously harmful to newborns, around 1 in 14 British boys are circumcised at birth, for cultural and/or religious reasons. However, the circumcision of girls has already been made illegal. It is time for this injustice to end, and to give all infant boys the protection they truly deserve.", says petition creator Ben Wood, who is not known to NORM-UK.

The government's e-petition website gained notoriety last week when it was widely reported that the transport secretary, Douglas Alexander, effectively dismissed the views of the million citizens who had signed an e-petition opposing the government's proposed road pricing scheme.

NORM-UK believes that all men should be given an informed choice about circumcision when they are old enough to fully understand the implications, but is not presently convinced that legislation would be an effective measure at this stage. However, if the e-petition can stimulate the sort of media coverage and debate on the issue that we have seen with road pricing then we believe that that would be a very positive development.
