NewsFather who branded his children cites circumcision rights in his defenceThursday 13th May 2010A Californian father who branded his children as his property has been found not guilty of second degree assault. The jury could not agree on a lesser charge of fourth degree assault and the judge declared a mistrial. Mark J. Seamands branded both his teenage sons and his teenage daughter with the initials SK (for Seamands' Kids) using a foot long branding iron which left a 3 inch by 3 inch scar. His sons testified that they wanted to be branded, and Seamands remarked that it was a "family thing". Seamands' lawyer stated that there was no criminal intent, the young people were "not disfigured" and that this case was about "different strokes for different folks". His defence case also used the example of circumcision to illustrate that US parents are permitted to customise children's bodies. |
