NewsBritish Doctors Admit Circumcisions without Consent in Glasgow SurgeryMonday 12th July 2004Our correspondent writes: The Scotsman and the BBC have reported that Dr. Virinder Madhok and Dr. Ayyaswany Vasanthakrishnan have told the General Medical Council (GMC) that two boys were circumcised in their Glasgow surgery without obtaining written parental consent. The Muslim mother and aunt of one of the boys complained he was returned to them with blood on his body and legs, scratches on his torso, and in a distressed state. The BBC reported, "Dr Madhok, of Dalziel Drive, Glasgow, suggested that he had not been anaesthetised properly or at all during the surgery, it was also claimed, which the doctor denied." Please see the BBC website (linked above) for the full story. The doctors have denied causing unnecessary pain, and the case continues before the GMC. |
