NewsTesco boss urges choice in healthcareSunday 6th February 2005Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco plc, addressed public services summit organised by The Guardian on 2nd February to argue that there are similarities between public and private services and the NHS could provide better services by allowing customers to choose what they want. His full speach has been published in The Guardian on 4 February. Leahy debunks the myth that customers are unable to choose what they need because they lack the medical expertise. He states "I've found in my work that people have extraordinary insight into what's in their best interests". He states that he would try very hard to exhaust the possibilities of providing information to help people choose and reminds us that the Internet provides some support and evidence for this approach. Leahy concludes that both public and private sector are having to adjust how we deliver our services to the reality that the consumer is King. |
